I have decided to play around with scratch to create the worst video game ever. In recent video game history an old game is being unearthed; literally! A documentary is being made about the myth that millions of unsold copies of the E.T. the Extra-terrestrial, made by Atari and for the Atari 2600, were buried in a landfill in New Mexico. This game is not just any old piece of metal and plastic though. This game almost defined the end of video gaming itself. The title screen has music from steven speilberg's movie and does a nice job transferring that into 8-bit music, but then the only sound effects re E.T walking around the screen and the occasional pit fall sound. There is no background music. E.T. is dropped off on Earth but a person barely knows what to do. So why dig this game up? One reason is to document the process and marketing for the Xbox One. The other reason is to se if the myth is really true or not. Much like how The Room is know for being the worst movie in film history so too is E.T. However, this can elevate its status from a bad movie or game to being a cult classic. The Room has been dubbed the worst film in history due to marketing and people want to see it because it is a bad movie and funny to watch. Okay so maybe not E.T. is not a cult classic that you would want to play, but it is infamous in video game culture. Here is a list to show that and I am sure many others would show the same thing. http://www.gamesradar.com/worst-games-all-time/
This side note brings me to my project. The point of the project was to have a basic understanding of how scratch works. Well for a simple program it is fun to mess around with it. A person can control one's sprite by listing commands without programming them and they can draw on the sprite. However, there is no easily accessible eraser for that function. It is not an intuitive program without a tutorial. So I decided to try to outdo E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. I combined music from the Final Fantasy game in very much the same way E.T. does. However, there is no Final Fantasy sprite in the game. Already there is a disjunction between what one might expect and what actually is occurring. The person can move around the picture frame, much like E.T, but for what the image is, the sprite is moving against gravity and that is just not possible. In addition, the sprite is falling with gravity at the same rate so there is no physics engine in the game. The image also has no mental relationship with the player of the game and with E.T. there is. E.T. wanders around a forest in the movie and does so in the game. A major difference is that E.T. blends into the background, while my sprite does not.
Inorder to fully make a bad game I would have had to make the game either freeze upon being activated or just be a white screen. However, that is too abstract in a person's thinking for what a video game is and would not show that I played with scratch at all.
Without further ado here is the link for the game
